Top 10 Paint Protection Film Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Top 10 PPF Installation Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Installing paint protection film (PPF) is one of the best ways to keep your car’s paint looking flawless, but only if it’s done right.
We’ve seen it all at Dr. Solar HQ: bubbling, peeling, stretch marks, and more. Whether you're using precut kits or bulk film, avoiding these common errors will save you time, money, and frustration.

1. Skipping the Prep Work
PPF is only as good as the surface underneath it. If you don’t wash and decontaminate the paint first, you’re sealing in dirt, dust, and oil, leading to adhesion issues.
Pro tip: Use an iron remover and clay bar, followed by isopropyl alcohol for a clean, residue-free surface.
2. Installing in a Dirty or Windy Environment
Garages are your friend. Outdoor installs invite dust, bugs, and breeze-induced errors that will leave you peeling and reapplying more than you'd like.
3. Using the Wrong Slip Solution
Dish soap isn’t the same as a proper slip solution. Too much surfactant = poor tack. Too little = film sticks too early and can't be repositioned.
Use: Baby shampoo and distilled water in the right ratio, or grab our ready-made install kit.
4. Not Using a Squeegee (or Using It Wrong)
Squeegees aren't optional. Improper pressure or direction causes bubbles and silvering. Always start from the center and work out in smooth, overlapping passes.

5. Trimming Directly on the Paint (Without Protection)
Trimming PPF with a blade on paint is risky business. Unless you're using a cutting tape system or extreme care, you could score the clear coat.
Solution: Use precut film to skip cutting altogether or tape off high-risk edges.
6. Stretching Too Much (Or Too Little)
PPF should hug curves, but over-stretching distorts the material and weakens it. Under-stretching leads to lifting or creasing.
7. Not Heating the Film When Needed
Cold installs = stiff, unforgiving film. Using a heat gun helps activate the adhesive and conform film to complex curves. Just don’t overheat it.
8. Ignoring the Drying Time
Trying to wash or expose the film to rain too soon can cause lifting and edge failure. Most PPF needs 24–48 hours of dry curing time.

9. Leaving Air Bubbles or Water Trapped
Small bubbles can disappear over time, but larger ones, especially those with debris, will stay and create permanent defects.
Fix: Use your squeegee methodically and check under light before calling it done.
10. Not Watching an Install Guide First
Jumping in blind is a recipe for frustration. Whether you’re using precut or bulk, always watch a how-to first.
