How to Install Dr. Solar Home Window Film: A Complete DIY Guide
A clean, bubble-free installation comes down to two things: preparation and patience. This guide walks you through the exact process our team recommends for every Dr. Solar home window film application, from mixing your slip solution to letting the film cure. Follow each step in order and you'll get results that look and perform like a professional install.

What You'll Need

Your order includes the Dr. Solar Window Film. Before you begin, gather these additional tools:
- Spray bottle
- Baby shampoo
- Squeegee
- Lint-free microfiber towel
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
Step 1: Mix the Slip Solution
Fill a spray bottle with 16 oz (475 mL) of water, then add 6–10 drops of baby shampoo. Shake gently before use.
Pro Tip: Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, Windex®, or degreasing soaps. These can interfere with the adhesive and compromise your installation.
Step 2: Clean the Window Thoroughly

Pro Tip: Every speck left on the glass will be trapped beneath the film. Take your time on this step - it matters more than any other.
Step 3: Measure and Cut
Measure the width and height of the glass, then cut the film approximately 1 inch (25 mm) larger on every side. This extra margin gives you room to position the film before trimming.
Pro Tip: Lay the film on a clean, flat surface with the clear backing liner facing up.
Step 4: Remove the Backing Liner

Separate the liner from the film - many people do this by hand, but if you'd like extra grip, apply two small pieces of tape to opposite sides of one corner and pull the tape apart to start the separation. As you slowly remove the liner, generously spray the adhesive side of the film with the slip solution.
Pro Tip: Installing alone? Temporarily place the film with the liner side against a nearby clean window while you work on removing the backing liner.
Step 5: Spray the Window
Pro Tip: Spray your fingers before handling the adhesive side of the film. This helps prevent fingerprints from showing through once the film is applied.
Step 6: Apply the Film
Place the wet adhesive side against the wet glass, starting near the top of the window. Slide the film into its final position.
Pro Tip: Keep both the film and glass wet throughout positioning. This gives you the freedom to adjust placement without the film sticking prematurely.
Step 7: Squeegee the Film
Lightly spray the outside of the film. Using your squeegee, make a capital "T" across the top and center, then work from the center outward toward the edges. Continue until all water and air bubbles are removed.
Pro Tip: Starting from the center produces a smoother finish with fewer trapped bubbles.
Step 8: Trim the Film
Using the squeegee as a guide, trim all four sides with a sharp utility knife and remove the excess film.
Pro Tip: Use a fresh blade for every installation. A sharp blade is the difference between a clean edge and a ragged one.
Step 9: Final Squeegee
Wrap the squeegee with a paper towel or microfiber towel, then push any remaining water toward the window gaskets. Repeat until no excess water remains.
Step 10: Let It Cure
Your installation is complete. Small water bubbles or slight haze at this stage are completely normal - they'll disappear as the film cures. Wait 72 hours before cleaning the window.
